Year-round lawn maintenance in Brisbane

The lawn looked great after it was last done, and now it's thinning, patchy or full of weeds again. Lawn maintenance is the work that stops the slide: each treatment timed to the season, and planned after we've had a proper look at the grass and the soil.

What's going wrong

Why lawns go backwards in South East Queensland

Lawns rarely fail for one reason. Usually a few small problems stack up over a couple of seasons until the grass can't keep up. These are the ones we see most around Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast:

  • Soil packed hard by foot traffic, dogs and cars, so water runs off
  • A spongy layer of thatch choking couch and kikuyu
  • Grass that's hungry after a season of strong growth and heavy rain
  • Broadleaf weeds, bindii and summer grasses filling the thin spots
  • Grubs, armyworm or fungal patches that go unnoticed until the damage shows
  • Mowing too low, or light daily watering that keeps roots shallow

Fix one and ignore the rest, and the lawn never quite comes good. Our job is to work out which of these apply to yours.

Lawn going backwards and not sure why?

We'll look at the grass, the soil and the weeds, tell you what's actually causing the problem, and lay out what to do about it. Jobs from $220.

Through the year

What lawn maintenance looks like across the seasons

Couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia do their growing in the warm months, so most of the work is timed around spring and summer.

Spring

September to November

Renovation season: core compacted soil, scarify out thatch, top dress and give the first proper feed. Pre-emergent for summer grass goes down early, timed so the coring doesn't break up its barrier.

Summer

December to February

Feed through the main growing period, mow often and a little higher, and water deeply rather than daily. Watch for grubs and armyworm, and spot spray summer grasses.

Autumn

March to May

A last feed carries the lawn into winter. Pre-emergent for bindii and winter grass, a second coring for busy lawns, and a watch for fungal disease as nights turn cool and damp.

Winter

June to August

Growth slows right down. Spot spray winter weeds before bindii sets its prickles, and test the soil so the spring work is planned properly.

Doing some of it yourself? Our grass maintenance tips cover the basics of getting a lawn ready for spring.

Who does what

What we do, and what you do

Some jobs need machinery and know-how. Others are habits that keep the lawn healthy in between.

What we handle

What you handle

  • Mowing often, taking no more than a third of the leaf at a time
  • Keeping mower blades sharp so the grass is cut, not torn
  • Watering deeply in the morning, less often, so roots go down
  • Keeping traffic off when the lawn is wet or freshly treated
  • Telling us when something changes, like dead patches appearing

Our guide to watering and feeding grass has more on getting both right.

Your options

Three ways to keep on top of it

The right one depends on the lawn, your budget and how much you'd rather do yourself.

One-off seasonal work

Book us when the lawn needs it: a spring renovation, an autumn feed and weed treatment, or a grub treatment when damage appears.

A scheduled program

Feeding, weed control and pest checks every eight weeks, planned around your grass. See how our regular lawn service works and who it suits.

Renovate, then DIY

A thorough lawn renovation in spring, then you take it from there with our advice on feeding, mowing and watering.

Pricing

What does lawn maintenance cost?

Jobs start from $220. The price comes down to how big the lawn is, how easily the machines get in, what state the grass and soil are in, and which treatments it needs.

You get a firm price after the free onsite check, with the work laid out step by step so you can do it all at once or spread it over the year. Rather talk first? Call the office on 07 3829 9777.

We explain what's causing the problems and lay out what to do and when, with a firm price. Jobs from $220.

  3. The work, in the right order

Our crew does each job when it falls due, with the right machine for your access, and checks how the lawn has responded to the last one.

Common questions

How much does lawn maintenance cost in Brisbane?
Jobs start from $220. The price depends on the size of the lawn, the condition it's in, which treatments it needs and the access for machinery. A feed and weed treatment costs far less than a full renovation. After the free onsite check you get a firm price for each job before anything starts.
What does lawn maintenance include?
The turf health work: fertilising, weed control, grub and pest treatment, aeration and coring, scarifying, top dressing, soil testing and overseeding. Few lawns need all of it, so we work out which jobs yours needs and when. Mowing stays with you or your mowing contractor.
How often does a lawn need maintenance?
Most warm-season lawns in South East Queensland do well with three or four feeds through the growing season, weed control at the change of seasons and coring once a year in spring. Busy lawns may need coring twice a year, and thatchy couch or kikuyu may need scarifying every year or two.
What is the difference between lawn maintenance and regular lawn service?
Lawn maintenance is the full range of work, booked when your lawn needs it. Our regular lawn service is one way of doing it: a set program of feeding, weed control and pest checks every eight weeks. Renovation jobs like coring and top dressing are booked separately, usually in spring.
When is the best time of year for lawn maintenance?
Spring to early summer for renovation work like coring, scarifying and top dressing, while the grass recovers fastest. Feeding carries on through the warm months, autumn suits winter weed control and a last feed, and winter is the time to test the soil and plan.
Do you maintain strata and commercial grounds?
Yes. As well as homes and acreage, we look after lawns at strata and body corporate complexes and commercial sites. Larger grounds, school ovals and sports fields come under our sports field management service, which covers sites up to 400 km from Beenleigh.
