Why Logan lawns struggle

Logan is a big city with very different kinds of lawn. Turf laid a year or two ago in Yarrabilba or Park Ridge has little in common with a lawn that has been down for decades in Springwood, or a couple of acres of kikuyu out at Jimboomba. What many of them share is clay underneath, and a handful of problems that come up again and again.

  • New turf that browned off in its first summer and never really recovered
  • Clay so hard that sprinkler water runs down the driveway
  • Sloping lawns in the hilly suburbs shedding rain before it soaks in
  • Grass thinning out under big gums and shade trees
  • Acreage lawns that have slowly gone thin, bumpy and patchy
  • Dead patches spreading in late summer, often a sign of lawn grubs

What Logan lawns usually need

Most of Logan is a 15 to 40 minute drive from our base. As a general guide, this is what we tend to find in different parts of the city. Your lawn may be different, and the onsite check is where we find out.

New estates

Yarrabilba, Park Ridge, Logan Reserve, Flagstone

New lawns are often laid over fill or cut clay that months of trucks and earthmoving have packed down, with only a thin layer of soil on top. Roots stay shallow, the turf dries out fast in the heat, and water runs off instead of soaking in.

Lawn coring opens up the clay, and top dressing over a season or two builds the soil the lawn is missing. Our guide to core aeration explains why it works.

Established suburbs and the hills

Springwood, Shailer Park, Daisy Hill, Logan Central, Marsden, Browns Plains

In the hilly, leafy streets of Daisy Hill, Shailer Park and Springwood, the problems are slope and shade: rain runs straight off, and big gums take both the light and the moisture. On the flatter, older blocks around Logan Central, Marsden and Browns Plains, years of feet and mowers pack the clay tight while couch and kikuyu build up a spongy thatch.

Coring lets water soak into slopes and packed clay instead of running off, and scarifying clears the thatch, often as part of a full lawn renovation. Where shade is the real problem, we'll say so and talk through what will cope with less light.

Acreage

Acreage lawns and horse paddocks

Head south and west towards Jimboomba, Logan Village, Greenbank and Chambers Flat and the blocks get bigger. That often means a large house lawn, a mix of kikuyu, couch and paddock grasses, and a paddock or two for the horses, all on the one property.

A hire-shop aerator rarely gets through that much ground in a weekend. Our John Deere Aercore 800 and tractor-towed sand spreader cover the open ground, and the Toro stand-on aerator handles the house yard and the tight spots. Our horse paddock maintenance covers paddock aeration, weed control and feeding.

Price and why us

What it costs in Logan, and why us

What lawn care costs in Logan

Jobs start from $220. A townhouse lawn in Springwood that only needs coring and a two-acre renovation at Jimboomba are very different jobs, so the price comes down to:

  • The size of the lawn or property
  • Access: side gates, steps, slopes and soft ground
  • Whether it needs a single job or a full renovation
  • How much top dressing it takes to level the lawn or build up thin soil

You get a firm price after the free onsite check, before anything is booked.

Logan lawn care questions

How much does lawn care cost in Logan?
Jobs start from $220. The size of the lawn, how easily the machines get in and the work it needs set the price. On acreage, the amount of open ground and whether paddocks are included make the biggest difference. After the free onsite check you get a firm price, before anything is booked.
When is the best time to aerate or renovate a lawn in Logan?
Spring to early summer, roughly September to December, while couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia are growing strongly and recover quickly. New-estate lawns are worth opening up once the turf has rooted in, usually by its first or second spring, before another summer of shallow roots. Busy lawns on heavy clay can take a second coring in late summer.
Why is my new estate lawn dying?
Very often it is what's underneath. New lawns are commonly laid over compacted fill or clay with only a thin layer of soil, so roots cannot get down and the turf dries out quickly in summer. Watering habits, lawn grubs and mowing too low can add to it. At the onsite check we look at the soil depth and the roots and tell you what is going on.
Do you work on acreage around Jimboomba and Logan Village?
Yes. Big open lawns and paddocks get our larger machinery, and the house yard gets the stand-on aerator, so one crew covers the whole block. After heavy rain we may move the date until the ground firms up, because a tractor on soft ground does more harm than good. For paddocks, see horse paddock maintenance.
Which parts of Logan do you cover?
All of it. Our Beenleigh base is part of Logan City, and every Logan suburb sits well inside our 100 km residential radius, from Springwood and Daisy Hill in the north to Browns Plains, Park Ridge, Jimboomba and Yarrabilba in the south and west. For the suburbs right around our base, see lawn care in Beenleigh.
