GPS line marking for clubs, schools and councils

Sports field line marking in Brisbane and South East Queensland

The fixture is set, round one is getting closer and the ground still has last season's faded lines, or none at all. We mark rugby league, union, AFL, soccer, touch, cricket and athletics with a GPS line marker, then keep the lines sharp all season.

When the lines are letting the ground down

Nobody notices line marking until it's wrong. A field a couple of metres short, or a 22 that has crept since the last re-mark, soon gets picked up by referees and visiting coaches.

  • Lines are re-marked by eye from the old ones, so the field shifts a little every week
  • Corners aren't square and the centre circle isn't quite round
  • A few days after marking, the paint has all but gone because the couch is growing fast
  • Several codes share the ground and players can't tell whose lines are whose
  • The volunteer who always did the marking has stepped back and nobody wants the job

Planning next season's fields?

February to April is the busiest stretch for line marking. Talk to us before then and we'll walk the ground, confirm the codes and field sizes, and tell you straight which dates we can do and what the season will cost.

What we mark

Line marking for winter and summer codes

Each code has its own dimensions and markings, and age groups vary again. We mark natural grass fields to your competition's specification and the space your ground actually has.

Rugby league

Touchlines, try lines and dead-ball lines, with a line every 10 metres, plus shorter mini and mod league fields. See football field marking.

Rugby union

Try and dead-ball lines, the 22s, halfway, broken 10 metre lines and the 5 and 15 metre dashes.

Football (soccer)

Penalty and goal areas, spots and arcs, the centre circle and corners, from full-size pitches to MiniRoos fields.

Touch

Sidelines, score lines, halfway and interchange areas, often with more than one field on a large ground.

AFL

Boundary line, centre square and circles, 50 metre arcs and goal squares. See AFL and cricket ovals.

Cricket

Boundary lines and fielding circles for summer, including ovals that carry a winter code the rest of the year.

Athletics

Running lanes, staggered starts, lane numbers and relay zones for school and club carnivals.

Events and custom layouts

Gala days and one-off layouts, set out from your plan or worked out with you on site.

GPS line marking

Why we set fields out with GPS

String lines and tape measures work, but small errors add up, and each re-mark tends to follow last week's faded line, so a field slowly drifts out of shape over a season. Our GPS line marker places the field from satellite positioning instead, and marks it in the same position at every visit.

  • Square corners, straight lines, and circles and arcs that are actually round
  • The same position at every re-mark, so the field holds its shape
  • Junior fields set out cleanly across a senior ground instead of squeezed in by eye
  • Run-off from fences, light poles and cricket wickets planned in from the start, so players have room to pull up
  • Fields that can be shifted a few metres between seasons to rest worn goal mouths

Timing

When to book line marking

Most line marking in South East Queensland follows the autumn and winter football season. Cricket takes over the ovals in the warmer months, and school carnivals follow the school calendar.

October to January

Plan and book

Confirm codes, field numbers and trial dates, and lock in the pre-season set-out.

February and March

Pre-season set-out

Fields marked from scratch for trials, training and the opening rounds.

Autumn and winter

In-season re-marks

Weekly or fortnightly, depending on growth, mowing, rain and how hard the ground is used.

Spring and summer

Cricket season

Boundaries and fielding circles on ovals that switch to cricket. Carnival tracks are marked whenever your date falls.

Schedule any pre-season turf aeration or top dressing for before the set-out, not after, or the new lines get cored through or covered in sand. The school oval and sports field maintenance guide covers the year-round work.

Price

What does line marking cost?

Line marking jobs start from $220. Re-marking a single field to an existing layout sits toward the lower end. Setting out a multi-code ground or a full athletics track takes longer and uses far more paint.

  • How many fields, and which codes
  • A first set-out or a re-mark of an existing layout
  • How often the lines are refreshed through the season
  • Travel distance from Beenleigh

You get a firm price in writing after the free onsite check, and a seasonal line marking contract costs the whole season up front for your committee or budget cycle.

Why All Grass Solutions

A turf crew that also marks lines

  • We look at the surface as well as the lines. Hard or bare ground is a safety issue once players go to ground, and our Clegg hammer measures how hard it is
  • Our own crew and our own GPS line marker
  • Family-run in Beenleigh, marking fields up to 400 km away
  • Line marking can sit inside a year-round sports field maintenance contract, so one crew looks after the surface and the lines
  • A written price and schedule your committee, school or council can sign off

Common questions

How much does sports field line marking cost?
Jobs start from $220. The price depends on how many fields you need, which codes, whether it's a first set-out or a re-mark of an existing layout, how often you want the lines refreshed and how far the ground is from Beenleigh. You get a firm price after the free onsite check, and a season of re-marks can be costed up front.
When should we book pre-season line marking?
As soon as you know your codes, how many fields you need and when trials or the first round start. For most autumn and winter competitions that means booking between October and January for a February or March set-out. Booking early leaves time to sort out post positions, junior field layouts and any surface work the ground needs first.
How often do the lines need re-marking during the season?
Most fields are re-marked weekly or fortnightly. Paint sits on the grass leaf, so every mow takes some of it off. Early in the season, while couch is still growing strongly, lines fade faster. Through winter, growth slows and they last longer. Heavy rain and wear in the goal mouths shorten their life too. Seasonal contracts set the schedule up front.
What is GPS line marking?
Instead of setting a field out with string lines and tape measures, a GPS line marker uses satellite positioning to place each line. Corners come out square, circles and arcs are accurate, and the field can be re-marked in the same position every time, so it holds its shape over the season instead of slowly drifting.
Which areas do you cover for line marking?
We're based in Beenleigh and mark sports fields up to 400 km away, across Brisbane, Logan, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, the Redlands, Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and the Northern Rivers. For grounds a long drive away, weekly re-marks aren't always practical, so we'll work out a schedule that is, often on the same trip as other field work.
