Lawn care across Brisbane Southside

Lawn gone thin under the trees, spongy underfoot or bare along the paths, however much you feed it? On the southside the usual culprits are decades of wear, shade from mature trees and new turf on compacted fill. We'll find which one is behind yours and lay out the work to fix it.

Why older southside lawns go backwards

In suburbs like Mount Gravatt, Mansfield, Wishart and Sunnybank, many lawns have been down for decades. In that time the clay packs hard, couch and kikuyu build a thick mat of old runners, and the trees planted with the house grow until they shade half the yard. More water or fertiliser won't fix any of that.

  • Grass thinning under trees and along shady fence lines
  • A spongy, springy feel underfoot
  • Bare tracks where people and dogs walk every day
  • Surface roots the mower keeps hitting
  • Weeds and moss filling the thin, shady patches

Newer estates in Rochedale and Pallara have a different problem: young turf laid over compacted builder's fill on small blocks, with roots that never got far into the soil.

We'll check the light, the thatch, the soil and the roots, then tell you straight what will help and what won't. Jobs from $220.

How we fix it

Lawn care that suits southside yards

Most southside jobs come down to one or more of these, and we price only the work your lawn needs.

Thatch in older lawns

Years of runners build a mat that sheds water and traps fertiliser before it reaches the soil. Dethatching and scarifying cuts it out. Couch and kikuyu take a firm pass; soft-leaf buffalo gets a lighter one.

Compacted clay and fill

Decades of feet and mowers, or a builder's compactor, squeeze the air out of the soil. Core aeration pulls plugs so water and roots can get down, and top dressing fills the holes and evens out the hollows.

Shade and tree roots

Grass under a big canopy competes with the tree for light and water. We core around surface roots, scale back the fertilising to suit slower growth, and suggest mowing a little higher so the grass keeps more leaf.

Many lawns need two or three of these in one visit. Our lawn renovation page explains the order we do them in, and our guide to core aeration goes deeper on compaction.

Tight access

A narrow side gate is rarely a problem

Older southside homes often have a single narrow path down the side of the house, and new homes on small lots can be tighter still. Our Toro stand-on core aerator fits through most side gates, so the backyard gets the same treatment as the front.

Southside lawn care questions

How much does lawn care cost on the southside?
Jobs start from $220. A single coring on a small yard sits at the lower end; a full renovation with scarifying, coring and top dressing costs more, and steps or a narrow side path add time. You get a firm price at the free onsite check, before anything is booked.
When is the best time to renovate a southside lawn?
Spring to early summer, roughly September to December. Couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia are warm-season grasses, so they recover fastest when the soil is warm and the days are long. Shaded lawns grow more slowly than lawns in full sun, so they gain the most from an early start that gives them the whole summer to fill in.
Will grass grow under my trees?
It depends on how much light gets through. Soft-leaf buffalo and some zoysias cope with more shade than couch, but under a dense canopy with roots taking the water, no treatment will make a lawn thrive. We will tell you honestly whether a spot can hold grass, needs a more shade-tolerant variety or would do better as a garden bed.
Which southside suburbs do you cover?
Carindale, Holland Park, Mount Gravatt, Mansfield, Wishart, Rochedale, Eight Mile Plains, Sunnybank, Calamvale, Pallara and the suburbs in between, all well inside our 100 km residential radius. Underwood, Springwood and Daisy Hill are in Logan City, so see our Logan lawn care page. Suburb not listed? Call and ask.
