Sports field maintenance in the Northern Rivers
Fields that stay soft for days after rain, goal mouths churned to mud by mid-season, and grounds left silted and sealed after a flood. We work out why your field isn't draining, fix what can be fixed from the surface down, and bring our own crew across the border from Beenleigh.
- Year-round contracts costed for your budget
- In-house Clegg hammer testing and soil sampling
- Tractor-mounted aeration and top dressing gear
- Fields up to 400 km from Beenleigh
Why Northern Rivers fields struggle to drain
The Northern Rivers is one of the wettest parts of NSW, and many grounds sit on river flats. Rain on a compacted, clay-heavy surface has nowhere to go, so the field stays soft, boots churn it up, and it dries hard and rutted, which is an injury risk for players.
Floodwater can leave silt that seals the surface and smothers the grass, and humid summers drive fast couch and kikuyu growth, so thatch builds up quickly.
- Water lying on the field long after the rain stops
- Muddy, churned goal mouths and centre circles
- A crust of silt or a sealed surface after flooding
- Spongy thatch that holds water and plays slow
Ground still soggy days after the rain?
We'll walk the field, look at where the water sits and why, and take Clegg hammer readings and pull soil cores. Then we'll tell you plainly what surface work can fix and what it can't.
Better drainage starts at the surface
On many wet fields the trouble is in the top few centimetres: a sealed, compacted layer that water can't get through.
Core aeration
Hollow tines punch through the sealed layer, opening channels for water and air. Busy, wet fields often need turf aeration more than once a year.
Sand top dressing
Filling the core holes with sand and top dressing over a few seasons builds a free-draining layer that stays firmer when wet.
Thatch removal
Commercial scarifying cuts out the spongy mat that soaks up water, so the field dries sooner and plays truer.
If the real problem is a drainage system that has failed or was never put in, we'll tell you. Surface work helps, but it can't replace drains.
Bringing a field back once the water goes down
Every flood leaves a field differently, so recovery starts with a walk-over. A typical plan:
- Check for debris and soft spots before machinery goes on
- Core through the silt so water and air reach the roots again
- Top dress and level where silt and scouring have left it uneven
- Soil test, because floodwater can change pH and nutrient levels
- Feed, then oversow or turf bare areas to rebuild cover
Working in northern NSW
Tweed Heads is under an hour from Beenleigh, Murwillumbah about an hour, Byron Bay and Ballina about an hour and a half, Lismore and Casino around two hours, and Grafton roughly three.
- Visits grouped with nearby grounds, so travel is shared
- Work planned around NSW school terms, which don't line up with Queensland's
- Start times confirmed in NSW time while daylight saving is on
What it costs
Jobs start from $220. The price after the free onsite check depends on:
- The playing area, and how many fields
- The works and the tonnes of sand
- Repairs left by a wet season or flood
- Distance from Beenleigh
The price is firm, and contracts are costed up front for your budget year.
Cause first, then the fix
- Diagnosis first, so you don't pay for work that won't fix a wet field, with a plain written report for the committee, school or council.
- Our own gear, from a John Deere Aercore 800 corer to a 3 m³ tractor-towed spreader for the sand.
- Family-run in Beenleigh, the crew behind our sports field maintenance across South East Queensland.
